2013
Kulttuurisauna (2013, Helsinki, Finland) is a public sauna and cultural space co- founded by architect Tuomas Toivonen (°1975, Helsinki, FI) and designer Nene Tsuboi (Osaka, JP). Developed as part of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012, Kulttuurisauna combines architecture, design and sauna culture in a low-energy building on Helsinki’s waterfront. The sauna opened to the public in 2013.
Kulttuurisauna grew from Toivonen and Tsuboi’s interest in the public sauna as both a place for bathing and a space for meeting, sharing and quiet togetherness. Designed and built by the founders, the building uses concrete, wood and glass, and incorporates renewable energy systems including solar power, sea heat and wood pellets. Alongside the sauna, the space hosts small-scale cultural activities such as lectures, concerts and other gatherings.
The founders approach Kulttuurisauna as an ongoing experiment in urban culture, exploring how architecture, everyday rituals and environmental responsibility can come together. The project has become a recognised example of contemporary Finnish sauna architecture and of the revival of Helsinki’s public sauna culture.
