Mahmoud Khaled (°1982, Alexandria, EG) is a visual artist who lives and works between Cairo and Berlin. Working across installation, photography, video, sculpture, text and publishing, he examines the relationships between intimacy, desire, memory and power. His practice draws on archival research, found materials and speculative narratives to explore queer histories, institutional authority, domestic space and the politics of visibility.
Khaled’s work has been presented internationally at the 16th Sharjah Biennial, the Istanbul Biennial, Manifesta 8, BOZAR in Brussels, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in Athens, Whitechapel Gallery in London, Centre Pompidou Málaga, Bonner Kunstverein and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. His solo exhibitions include The Beautiful Captive at Gypsum Gallery, Cairo, and Fantasies on a Found Phone, Dedicated to the Man Who Lost It at The Mosaic Rooms, London. Khaled was a fellow of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program and an Art Explora resident in Paris.
